My tricks for placing indoor plants

With the beginning of winter and the attenuation of gardening activity, flower growers return to indoor plants "abandoned" during the summer. Winter worries begin: there is little light, the air is dry, the temperature is high ... Most plants are uncomfortable in such conditions. There are many ways to provide suitable conditions for indoor plants, including few that are common. I’ll tell you about some that my indoor plants and myself liked.

My tricks for placing indoor plants

Houseplant Life in Water

Among my plants, there are cyperus hydrophores, for example, papyrus (Cyperus alternifolius) They generally like it when the roots are in the water, they are so used to in their habitats. Well, please! I put the pot with cyperus in a deep container, pour pebbles brought from different places of rest around, and pour water so that the bottom of the pot with cyperus is in it.

So that cyperus is not bored, next to pebbles, above the water level, I put a small pot with small-leaved ivy - growing up, it hangs nicely from the edges of the container. And cyperus is good - wet, and the splinter is good - the humidity here is high. In general, the perfect combination of plants in indoor conditions.

By the way, this fountain pot was great for growing freshly rooted plants: I place a container with a sprout on pebbles to cyperus. In this company, everything quickly takes root and starts to grow.

At work, embodied a slightly different option, with adult cyperus. In a large and deep pallet, she placed a pot of cyperus, large stones, small pebbles and small shells (colleagues from the resorts also drag everything). Settled in water limnobium shoot (Limnobium laevigatum), an aquatic plant similar to duckweed, but larger.

Aquarium snails settled along with it - it just so happened. Variegated small-leaved ivy was planted in a pot for cyperus - the combination turned out to be very interesting.

All this construction promotes relaxation: water, stones, greens, floating rafts of limnobium and snails crawling on a pallet ... At work, this is very important. Even annoyed visitors calm down somehow.

The only drawback is that cyperus in such room conditions grows at a wild speed, you have to divide it finely every year. Well, limnobium also grows well, however, it is much easier to attach it in good hands. Together with the snails.

Regular papyrus (Cyperus alternifolius) loves to grow in water.

Life over water

Saintpolis (Saintpaulia), preferring moist air, but not constantly loving “wet feet”, settled in a large pan on evenly sprinkled small pebbles. In the pallet there are 7 pots with multi-colored violets. Colors can be combined.

When the assortment allows (the violets somehow live all the time for me - some appear, others go to friends and work), I make blue-white or violet-pink combinations. When they do not bloom, in the middle I put variegated compositions for revitalization.

It is very convenient to water from the pallet. I just pour water on the surface of the pebble, and there they decide for themselves how much to drink.

This option greatly facilitates the care of violets, and the place is saved - dozens of pots can be placed in several large pallets. And they look pretty interesting: a sort of flowering bunch.

Conditions for indoor plants "in a communal apartment"

When the number of plants in indoor conditions (on window sills and other horizontal surfaces) exceeded a certain critical level (there was nowhere to put it), I began to organize joint living with them, without encroaching on my personal space.

Large pots with oleander, Strelitziacompact dracaena settled in a dry place near the window, for brightness added a blooming hippeastrum (and changed as one fades and another blooms).

Around the large cyperus on a wide tray with water, ferns were placed and hung maidenhair, skolopendrovy leaflet, bifid nephrolepis. It’s wet enough for them not to dry tender leaves. Still, removing the fallen leaves of nephrolepis quickly bothers.

Another option suitable for plants in small pots: pour expanded clay into a wide and low pots and place plants in pots on it, creating all kinds of compositions. It is very convenient to collect growing plants there (there is not enough space for everyone near cyperus). And even not necessarily with similar environmental requirements, as they are easily rearranged from place to place. Again, for the brightness of the composition, you can always add some kind of flowering plant, or even a couple.

It is better if the plants are of a different nature of growth: I tried these options for compositions:

  • Murraya paniculatavariegated leaf ivy, saltyroilia, Saintpauliayoung chlorophytum;
  • seedling coffee treeyoung hamedorea, ivy, balsam, gloxinia, geranium;
  • young spathiphyllumgrown up hamedorea, peperomyprocess cissus rhomboid, small azalea;
  • small gardenia jasmineprocess scindapsus paintedprocess climbing anthurium, saltyroiliavariegated ivy.

If there is nothing small blooming, between the pots I fix a narrow container with water and put a cut flower there.

Small pot compositions in large pallets also work well.

I made options with stones, driftwood, pebbles - the widest scope for creativity!

In a thirty-centimeter pot you can plant dozens of cacti!

House plants "in the hostel"

The desire to cram as many plants as possible indoors at the available volume encouraged me to do numerous experiments with sharing. The combination seemed very beautiful peperomy of ampel variegate with an adult lemon: peperomia quickly covered the surface of the soil, hung from the edge of the pot, giving lightness and grace to a harsh lemon. I repeated this combination at work, and it enjoyed constant success.

Solerailia good as a groundcover for all large plants, but it turned out to be a particularly successful background for large fragrant dracaena, shading her bright yellow stripes on the leaves.

Small-leaved variegated ivy successfully got along with the green leaf compact Dracene Derema. Peperomia "covered her legs" oleander.

Nobody infringes anyone, everyone grows together. In ground cover roots in the upper layer, in large plants - from the bottom.

Succulents compose well. Many of them grow slowly, and once planted in a common capacity, you can not bother with transplantation for several years. And how many cacti can be crammed into a thirty-centimeter pot!

Succulents and cacti require special handling - good drainage or a special container from which you can drain excess water.

When the fashion for cacti near computers took place at work, my colleagues and I arranged for them to live together in a common capacity. They covered the surface with pebbles and placed on the windowsill. Cacti are grateful plants, they responded to such a move with a cheerful look, and bloomed the next year.

Groundcover can be used as mulch for large plants

Mulching Indoor Plants, or Undercover Life

Gardening leaves its mark on the manner of growing plants in indoor conditions: getting used to mulching, I don’t want to look at bare ground even in indoor flowers. But there are plants to which no one can be planted as ground covers.

Monstera, for example - under it is as dark as under a sofa! Or spathiphyllum - the foliage is low and grows strongly. Ferns, too. It’s scary to plant someone under Strelitzia - it will strangle.

In the fall, they sent me planting material for garden plants packed in sphagnum (such luck!). That's what I used as a mulching material for those plants that do not favor the settlers. Sphagnum moss does not rot, retains moisture well and looks organic in pots.

Pebbles in this capacity also work if watered from a pallet, because when watering from above, a coating appears on pebbles, no matter how you uphold the water. Coconut fiber goes well, I only had enough for a monster. But the variegated leaves of Dieffenbachia are well emphasized by expanded clay.

Dear readers! "Fussing" with indoor plants is a wonderful relaxation, rest for the soul, despite the grumbling of relatives about the clutter of living space. In addition, in addition to a variety of usefulness, it is also an excellent material for creativity. You can also connect children if you managed to tear them from the gadgets. If not, arrange them to find design samples on the Internet and try to do better. Maybe they’ll get involved ...
