I have many exotic plants living at my place. Carried away by them, I overlooked, so to speak, the traditional ones. Somehow I went to a neighbor and was shocked by the magnificent cascade of soft pink tiered Decembrist flowers. Of course, soon I had a sprout that quickly gave roots. I was looking forward to winter flowering, but numerous buds suddenly showered. I didn’t search for a reason for a long time, it turned out to be insultingly banal. Now I know what care the Decembrist should ensure that it blooms profusely. I will gladly share the secrets of its cultivation in this article.

Decembrist - how to achieve abundant flowering?

Why do we love Decembrist?

Today, any plant can be purchased at flower shops or ordered online. And in the old days, most flowers were obtained in the form of processes from friends. And the Decembrist, whose care is simple, was one of the most common types in the apartments of Soviet citizens. Thanks to its unpretentiousness, he perfectly acclimatized in polyclinics, and libraries, and in campaign corners.

This is a houseplant that actually bears the name Schlumbergera (Schlumbergera), literally woven from contradictions:

  1. Refers to cacti, but does not have thorns.
  2. It blooms in winter, when other plants are dormant.
  3. In nature, it grows, like an epiphyte, on other taller plants, and at home it is well rooted in ordinary soil.
  4. He does not like plentiful watering, but loves a warm shower.
  5. It has fragile segmented processes, but feels more comfortable as an ampel plant.

The homeland of the Decembrist is considered the highlands of Brazil. There, under the canopy of tropical trees, amazing plants bloom that are not attached to the soil. Surprisingly, the Schlumbergera perfectly adapted to room conditions and became the favorite of many gardeners.

Yes, Decembrist is relatively unpretentious in the care and growing conditions, tolerates irregular watering well, blooms very beautifully in the midst of winter, but has its own small weaknesses. If you violate some rules of care, the Decembrist will not bloom or in a short time will drop buds and already opened flowers.

Decembrist - care and conditions

Watering

In nature, these plant species receive a very scarce portion of moisture. After heavy rains, the water evaporates quickly. Those who did not manage to create an internal stock do not live long. Therefore, the Decembrist has fleshy segments in which vital moisture is stored.

Water the flower should be moderate, not more than 1 time per week at rest. During flowering, you will have to focus on his needs. As soon as the earth has dried 3-4 cm deep, it means the time has come to moisturize.

Attention! You can not fill the flower. It quickly rots, starting with the roots. Schlumberger is better not to top up than to pour.

It is much more useful to combine meager watering with well-maintained water and daily moistening with a spray bottle.

Lighting

In memory of his former life, the Decembrist prefers diffuse lighting or even light shading. In winter, he lives quietly on the windowsill, without requiring additional protection. For him, the eastern and north-eastern side is more suitable.

For the Decembrist, the eastern and north-eastern window sills are more suitable

Temperature

The temperature range that the plant withstands during the period of active growth is quite large. It keeps within + 18 ... +30 degrees. It tolerates temperature jumps without problems.

Rest period

The Decembrist (care must be taken into account) goes to sleep in early September. During the dormant period, it looks more or less "decent" - it does not drop leaves, remaining just a green decorative bush. The color intensity decreases, acquiring a yellowish tint, the veins on the segments are more prominent. For the rest, it retains its familiar appearance.

Taking care of his health, I try to shade the window, restricting the access of the sun during this period. But the most important thing to worry about is lowering the temperature of the plant. As a rule, it turns out for me by itself - in the autumn the temperature gradually drops, and before the start of the heating season I have about 15 degrees on the windowsill. What Schlumberger needs!

2 months of cool content is enough for her. At this time, I hardly water it and return to the usual watering only with the appearance of buds.

Top dressing

If the plant is young and the transplant is carried out annually, then the Schlumberger nutritional reserve is enough for a year. But during the flowering period (to extend it), you can use liquid fertilizers for cacti, such as "Agricola", "Pocon", "Good power".

Decembrist propagation

To get a new shoot for the propagation of Decembrists, you do not need long preparation. It is enough just to break off the apical fragment of the branch containing at least 3 segments.

Important! During flowering, the plant cannot be cut.

It is most practical to combine the harvesting of cuttings with such a Decembrist care procedure as pruning. The plant stretches quite quickly, acquiring a slightly shaggy look. After flowering, every year I pluck the bush, removing weakened, curved, damaged and too long segments.

Please note: the plant is not cut with a knife or scissors, but unscrew the excess parts, turning them around its axis.

If I was asked to share a shoot, then I select several pieces, put them on a piece of paper in the same room for 1-2 days, and then plant them in yogurt cups with a mixture of cacti. Cover with a transparent jar on top. Rooting occurs after 2-3 weeks. Watering is frequent, but not plentiful.

The Decembrist easily cuts and takes root.

Why is the Decembrist not blooming?

Although the Decembrist is considered not a picky plant to care for, sometimes he may not form buds at all or dump them. There may be several reasons:

  • excessive watering;
  • too dark location (usually inside the room);
  • too poor soil (neglect of fertilizing during flowering);
  • the development of diseases (mainly rot);
  • the appearance of pests in too dry air.

The search for the cause is always carried out by the exclusion method. If the flower was timely transplanted into a new, more spacious pot, while the root system is in order, the leaves are clean, without signs of pests, then you need to adjust the lighting. Sometimes it’s enough to increase the humidity or change the location of the flower, as it still begins to form buds.

But, as a rule, the main reason for the lack of flowering Schlumbergera is a complete lack of peace. If the Decembrist did not stay at low temperatures for at least a month and a half, you probably will not wait for flowering from it.

If the plant scored buds and began to drop them, then it may simply not be able to cope with their quantity, additional nutrition is needed. But the most common reason is that the flower was moved to a new place.

With all his tolerance, the Decembrist does not accept moving during the period of budding and flowering. What happened to my handsome man. I did not know about this feature and moved the flower to the hall to admire its fancy flowers there. It was a shame, but now I know that it’s better not to touch it and let it bloom on the beloved windowsill.

The luxury of a gentle cloud of flowers looks especially touching against the background of snowy trees outside the window, and I sincerely enjoy this contrast. I wish you to meet the New Year holidays, admiring the flowering of the Decembrist.
