Do not be afraid of difficulties in transporting animals, you need to prepare in advance. Long journeys are rarely spontaneous. In order for you and your animals to be relatively comfortable on the trip (they won’t be at home, of course), you need to acquire everything you need, study the intricacies, train the animals, and be ready to devote most of your time to them. However, there are not many classes in the train. In the article I will tell about my experience of moving with a cat and a dog from the Far East to the Kuban.Important rules for transporting pets - personal experience
Preparation of documents for a trip with pets
First you need to decide what type of transport animals will travel. The fastest in our case is a plane. One change in Moscow. Cats and small dogs are transported in the cabin in a special container / bag.
According to the rules of serving airlines, a quota for the transportation of animals is established. It’s not at all a fact that another 5 people with dogs and cats will not want to fly on the chosen flight, then there will not be enough quotas for everyone. Dogs over 8 kg, except service and guide dogs, must fly in a cage / container in a heated luggage compartment (if there is one on the plane). There is also a quota.
Animals must have veterinary passport, vaccinations are given no later than 30 days before the trip. In addition, it is written out veterinary certificatevalid 5 days. Before boarding the plane, the animal is examined by a doctor. Here, too, one must be prepared for all sorts of surprises. However, you can come in a day, the doctor will examine.
The very idea that our dog will be in a closed container away from us for almost 10 hours of registration, boarding, flight, terrified me. Then a few hours in Moscow to see and again for 3 hours in a container. Better by train.
Take a train for 8 days with two transfers. To transport a large dog (ours - 27 kg), you need to buy a whole compartment. Well, okay, but let's go all our own - I, husband, dog and cat. At the same time, let's see the country.
Documents for animals on the railway are required the same as on the plane: veterinary passport with the indicated vaccinations (no later than 30 days before departure), veterinary certificatewritten out the day before departure, but here it is valid for the entire transit period.
The dog must have a leash / harness, a muzzle. To a cat - a basket / carrying bag.The very idea that our dog will be in a closed container away from us for almost 10 hours of flight, terrified me.
Practical preparation of animals for the trip
Since we lived in a semi-detached cottage with our own land, our animals were used to freedom of movement and great independence.
A cat in its 10 years of life in the family went to the tray only in the first year, with a small kitten, and then climbed somewhere under the bushes. The dog (5 years old) was accustomed to the collar from childhood, but he never walked on a leash, there was no such need. Mom’s genes from East Siberian husky did not tolerate freedom restrictions. He learned to dig holes under the fence precisely from her and walked independently in all the environs. Spent the night, however, always at home. And never went anywhere.
So a lot of preparatory work was ahead of us: to accustom him to a leash, to public transport, to a muzzle; cat - train in carrying. While the house was being sold - for more than a year, we trained.
We started to walk on a leash daily. The dog very quickly understood and felt how to walk side by side, not pull and not get confused. The station was a kilometer away from us, on weekends we went there to meet and escort trains, and after two months he was already relatively calmly walking along a moving rumbling train. There were cases when bored conductors, touching on a beautiful dog, allowed us to climb into the vestibule. The first time I dragged him there in my arms, he went back down the steps of tears himself. The next time I jumped on my own.
It is the same with buses: at first they just came and stood at the bus stop. Then, early in the morning, when there are almost no passengers, I pulled him into the bus, we drove two stops and returned home on foot. Starting next week, they began to travel a couple of stops regularly, and then on.
It turned out badly with a muzzle: as soon as I turned away, the dog began to pull him off. Sometimes successful. We went over a few muzzles and settled on the soft one; he endured his dog the longest. In the process of getting used to public transport, we went to the veterinary clinic and did all the necessary vaccinations.
With a cat, of course, it’s easier - put in a carrier, closed it, and she’s not going anywhere from there. But they traveled with her several times on public transport.
When they took train tickets, they tried to choose a compartment closer to the exit in order to walk the dog more often and longer.
From fleas, helminths, animals were treated a week before the trip. The day before departure, we went to the veterinary clinic, wrote a veterinary certificate for one for two. In the evening both washed, dried with a hairdryer.Our cat for its 10 years of life in the family went to the tray only in the first year. Our dog before this trip did not know the leash and never went anywhere.
What do we take for animals on the road?
- carrying, we put in it and fix the waterproof diaper;
- tray and tray filler;
- habitual litterwhich will remind a pussy about the house;
- food and favorite bowl (we took a container for drinking for a cat and a dog, they did not complain);
- medicines - calming drops.
For a dog:
- favorite litter- mat;
- feed and beloved a bowl;
- medicines - calming drops.
Since our animals are very furry, they took a sticky roller to collect wool from all surfaces. It turned out to be very out of place - against the background of stress, the wool flew from them rather strongly.
How our animals felt on the road
We left the Far East at the end of October. It was about 0 degrees by day, it was freezing at night. Both the cat and the dog have already prepared for the winter, overgrown with warm soft fur coats.In the first train, the cat examined everything, sniffed and settled on the mezzanine.
Boarding the first train
While getting into the carriage, while being accommodated, while the guide checked the tickets, the cat was in the carrying basket, sometimes meowing softly. From time to time, she had to open and stroke her so that she would not be so scared. At first, they couldn’t attach the dog in a tight compartment: at the bottom of the dog, the dog occupied more than half of the passage, and he was embarrassed to jump onto the lower shelf immediately.
After checking the tickets, we closed the compartment, released the cat, removed the collar and muzzle from the dog. Almost immediately, a smell appeared - animals in a state of stress smell strongly and not so pleasantly. Ventilation, of course, worked, but it didn't really help. Both had to give sedative drops.
The cat examined everything, sniffed and settled on the mezzanine. The dog got a mat on the lower shelf and persuaded him to get in there. They opened the door a little to breathe.
7 hours before Khabarovsk they spent relatively calmly, the cat sat quietly upstairs, the dog was walked in each parking lot for more than 5 minutes. During this time, most of the passengers of the car examined the dog, and the most courageous even stroked. Relations improved and the muzzle dressed only "on the way out." There were no animals, the dog drank water.
In Khabarovsk, we had 4 hours between trains, we walked around the neighborhood and almost lost a cat. I felt sorry for her, for all this time she did not eat anything, did not drink and did not go to the toilet, was lethargic and looked very unhappy. And I let her on the lawn. The previously sluggish cat with an incredible speed rushed into the bushes.
We drove her for about half an hour, until she flew into the parking lot and began to hide under the cars. The taxi drivers who were right there joined the hunt, and the hunt turned into a raid. In the end, from under the car I pulled her by the paw and carried it on my hands for another hour, soothing her. A husband and a dog walked alongside and reassured me.Our tired animals after several days of travel.
Transfer to another train
The second train Khabarovsk-Irkutsk settled without excesses, and traveled without much adventure. On the second day the dog was already accustomed, ate normally, walked with pleasure, jumped up into the carriage and jumped out of there. Passengers and guides treated the animals very well. However, our animals did not deliver any discomfort to anyone: the dog did not bark even once, the cat also made no loud noises.
But at first the cat felt bad, she ate nothing for another day and did not go to the toilet, despite the massage of her tummy. Only on the third day of our journey did she meow weakly and touch the nearby tray with her paw. Together with the cat and the tray, we ran to the toilet. Here the first results appeared. In the future, she went to the tray without problems.
After that, the cat came to life, began to eat, drink and climb throughout the compartment. Several times she even tried to go out into the corridor; the compartment door was open due to the heat in the carriage. The average temperature kept + 25 ° С, the conductors did not lower it because of children and grandmothers traveling in the car. And our shaggy dog at such degrees was uncomfortable, and she mainly lay on the floor, with her muzzle facing the corridor. Every 3-4 hours we had to warm ourselves and run out with a dog for a walk.
The temperature in Eastern Siberia was, on average, -15 ° C. On the third day, in Irkutsk, already -21 ° C, snow lay.Walking with a dog during a train stop.
In Irkutsk, we had another 4 hours between trains. My husband and I took turns walking the dog around the neighborhood. It's cold! We expected clothes at a minimum of -10 ° C. The cat was constantly sitting in the waiting room, now in the carrying, now in my arms.
When boarding the train, we had friction with the guide over the deadline for issuing a veterinary certificate (4 days ago). I had to understand at the level of the senior conductor. In the cold. But everything was settled, because our tickets are transit. Yes, and the veterinary certificate indicates the route.
In the new compartment, the animals settled quickly, the cat got to sleep on blankets in the mezzanine, the dog climbed onto the rug on the lower shelf - all the frozen ones lay down to warm up and sleep. From Irkutsk to the Urals it was still cold, -20 ° С ... 15 ° С ... -10 ° С.
By the end of the second day we reached Kazakhstan and crossed Kazakhstan with stops only at the border, where it was impossible to exit. 7 hours without going out. This is where the dog got sick. The dog ran to the door of the vestibule, I thought it was hot, I opened the door to the vestibule. In general, I had to clean a lot. It is good that very early in the morning, no one walked on the wagons. The dog felt very guilty, although I, of course, did not scold him.
The Southern Urals met us with good weather with already positive temperature and lack of snow. We had 20-minute stops every 4-5 hours, we walked with the dog every time. Although walking with a course, of course, is difficult. There are no paddocks at the stations. Most stations are fenced, so either walk between the tracks, or go to the forecourt, and then - in line and through the frame. For all 20 minutes. At smaller stations it’s easier, but the train is not there for long. In general, he is still extreme.
The guides and passengers with our animals became friends quickly, came one at a time and stroked the dog in groups. The cat on the second day got used to it so much that she walked around the car, passengers lured her to her compartment. I was afraid to go out into the vestibule.
The dog was enjoying the green grass while walking, but the cat was not accessible to the cat. I think if you walk a cat on a harness, you can only do this at long stops, and even then it will be a lot of stress for her - cats like the usual.
In general, for the 8-day trip, our animals showed themselves well done. Although the trip went to them hard - it is noticeable in appearance: they lost weight, the coat came out a little, and they looked tired.
