In my youth, dreaming of my own plot of land, I imagined that I would plant a huge variety of plants on my beds. However, there were several taboos on this list, one of which was tomatoes. I considered them one of the most difficult cultures. Probably because they did not bear fruit, as I would like, with my grandmother, and did not produce a crop proportional to the cost of labor - from my mother. But when my own plot appeared, I couldn’t grow tomatoes. And now every year I have plans for new varieties, unusual hybrids and a lot of fun for my children from all sorts of different tomatoes. In this article I will talk about tomatoes that were grown last season.

12 varieties of tomatoes that I tested last year.

How do I choose tomato varieties

Growing up, I realized that the crop yield depends on many factors. And most likely one of the significant reasons for the poor harvest of tomatoes in my grandmother (in the middle lane) was a variety.

Every year, throughout the village, girlfriends and neighbors exchanged seeds and planted several varieties with the same fruits - cream and one round, I can’t even remember the names. The dull picture of scarce tomato beds did not differ either where care was better, or where tomatoes were hardly watched. Now I understand that this was a natural degeneration of varieties.

My mother (in southern conditions) was pushed away from tomatoes by the need for constant pinching and daily watering. In addition, at high temperatures, the tomatoes ceased to tie fruits and were rather tired than pleased. In general, the first time I planted tomatoes seedlings from the market and analyzing the result, I decided that if planted, then something unusual.

Having accidentally hit one tomato collector, I made the first order and did not lose. No, some of the varieties were never planted again, but some gave a crop, even though during the construction period (and we had just begun construction) there was no time to plant and plant tomatoes every day. Then I realized that a variety is the main thing for tomato productivity, and everything else is secondary.

The next technique that I learned to use is feedback. If during the year I see that someone praises some sort, I mark it in my notebook and look for other reviews. Usually one can learn much more from descriptions of gardeners than from advertising descriptions: how tasty the variety is, how susceptible to illnesses, to changes in spring temperatures, to high summer temperature indicators, whether it is prone to cracking, to the formation of apical rot, green shoulders. Agree - this is important, and no one, except those who have already grown this tomato, will not tell you about it.

Further, after analyzing the list, I select a certain number of varieties that can fit on my beds. One of them is necessarily an early, trouble-free, long term fruiting. Such varieties are not tasty, but ripen earlier than others and become a guarantee that you will not be left without a crop. Somewhat average. And a few later.

Tomatoes I liked last season

1. Tomato "Sanka"

I will not dwell on this variety for a long time - I have already talked about it. He has been with me for many years and never fails.

According to the description: determinant (grows low, up to 60 cm), does not need to be stepsoned, nor needs a garter, and is resistant to spring temperature jumps. In seedlings it does not stretch. The first harvest gives quite early and amicably, then bears fruit for a long time. Almost not sick. From the bush gives about 3-3.5 kg of tomatoes.

The disadvantages of the variety that I am ready to put up with are not large enough fruits (up to 100 g), not juicy, not very tasty, however, as it should be for all the early ones.

2. Tomato "White Cherry"

This variety has also been with me for many years. I have it - a delicious "weed". I can’t refuse him, and he doesn’t let me get rid of himself. In the spring comes up wherever possible with a friendly carpet. This year she left him here and there, where there was a place.

Despite the fact that the fruits of the “White Cherry” are very small (up to 3 g) and it keeps up in the second half of summer - the taste, resistance to diseases and the duration of fruiting are not comparable with anything! Children, guests, and I myself eat the crop right in the garden - the sweet-spicy aftertaste leaves no one indifferent!

Growing "White Cherry" intensively. The height of the bush is about 60 cm. It can be stepson, then it will ripen a little earlier. You can not stepchild, then there will be more berries.

3. Tomato "Kiss of geranium"

This variety has been pleasing me for two years. In 2018, I was very pleased with him, I decided to repeat it last season. However, this time it was not grown through seedlings, but immediately sown in open ground. For this reason, he ripened later, but, like last year, turned out to be quite resistant to diseases and very tasty.

I consider it the most delicious tomato with a tomato flavor! And the most beautiful - the Geranium Kiss brush - is an unimaginably beautiful bouquet (or is it only for lovers of tomatoes ?!)

Early ripe. Determinant Resistant to major diseases. In height from 50 to 100 cm. In one brush knits up to 60 (or more!) Fruits.

4. Tomato "Ildi"

A new variety for me, but proved to be on such sides that it definitely goes on the list for landing next year.

Indeterminate. Medium maturity. Cherry. The height of the bush, declared - 2 m, for me - 1.4 m. It is not heavily stepsoned, you can stepchild to the first brush or not stepson at all. The mass of fruits in the description is up to 50 g, I got it in the region of 10 g. The brush is complex, it forms up to 60 tomatoes, in my case about 40.

I planted two bushes. One in a slight shade, the other in the open sun. The one who received more sun, ripened earlier, imposed more fruits. Despite the fact that by the end of the season the leaves became stained (the year was very rich in diseases since the beginning of summer), this did not affect the fruiting.

The taste of tomatoes is very pleasant: tomato, has some balanced sweetness and sourness. In one brush, both ovoid and pear-shaped fruits of different color saturation were formed. However, it was possible to use them as soon as they turn a little yellow.

Several tomatoes burst, but I can not say that this is the tendency of the variety to crack - rather because of the uneven moisture of the soil.

5. Tomato "Bonsai"

"Bonsai" was bought in passing - so wanted to children. According to the description, it turned out that this is a precocious, determinant variety, with a yield of 1 kg from a bush. It forms a low standard - 50 cm. The fruit mass is in the range of 25-30 g. Recommended for window sills.

Despite the heat, he tied up full brushes of tiny tomatoes. From mid-July he began to sing. The weight of tomatoes in my case was about 10 g. The taste is pleasant, balanced. On the bed it looks touching.

Tomatoes in doubt

6. Tomato "Liana"

Variety "Liana" decided to try as an alternative to "Sanka". The descriptions indicate that it is early, determinant (grows up to 40 cm), gives 2-4 kg per bush, fruits weighing 80 g, aligned, red, dense, good taste. Not afraid of sudden changes in temperature, not susceptible to apical rot, to bacterial and dry spotting.

Planted by direct sowing of seeds in open ground, since there was no longer any place for seedlings. He went up well. Great growing. But for some reason, the harvest moved to the beginning of August. However, he was not ill. Tomatoes turned out to be very similar to Sanka, but smaller, only 50-55 g. The taste is the most ordinary, tomato.

7. Tomato "Malachite Box"

"Malachite box" is a green-fruit variety, but rather, with gold - it has such an unusual color. I was tested in conjunction with the tomato "Swamp" - they are very similar, and they praise them together. However, someone likes one, someone else, because of the slight difference in taste.

Indeterminate. Mid early. Plant height up to 1.5 m. It is considered the sweetest (to sugary) of green fruit varieties. It has a taste of fruit notes. Very productive (6.5 kg per bush), with an extended fruiting period. It is characterized by good resistance to adverse conditions (spring temperature changes, heat) and to diseases.

In my case, he proved to be one of the most painful. Knitted badly. He reacted very badly to the heat - he constantly twisted the leaves. Slowly ripening. But it turned out delicious: richly sweet with a refreshing sourness. The pulp is juicy, with an original pink on the edge. The average weight of the fruit came out around 125 g. True, there was a significant minus and here - a thick skin, most likely due to unstable weather and heat.

8. Tomato "Swamp"

Determinant Plant height up to 1 m. Early - gives the first tomatoes from the 90th day. Not painful. Lusciously sweet. Fruits weighing 120-320 g, flat-rounded shape, have a pronounced ribbing, a beautiful bronze-green hue.

The fruits actually turned out to be sweet-cloying - not for everybody. It’s better to remove them not in the morning, but after warming up in the sun. However, if you remove it earlier, sourness will be present in the taste. I liked it more than Malachite Box.

9. Tomato "Grapefruit"

Late variety, praised. I bought it because of the coloring of the pulp - bicolor. It is considered the most delicious in this category. And at the same time it “knits” well, is not prone to diseases.

I did not want to knit. During its flowering period, the weather was unstable - either rain or heat, for this reason it was possible to try only two tomatoes from two bushes. Plus - it turned out to be painful (although this year is not an indicator - everything hurt around).

Ripe "Grapefruit" at the very beginning of August. The pulp is very beautiful. The tomatoes are juicy, sweet.

10. Tomato "Yellow-Pink Grandmother Vinay"

"Grandma Viney's Yellow and Pink" - became another experiment from the category of large tomato steaks with yellow-pink flesh.

According to the description: indeterminant, with a bush height of 1.2-1.5 m, high-yielding, not sick, very tasty, honey, without sourness. Most tomatoes have a mass of about 600 g.

In my case, there was a re-sort. It turned out something from the category of "heart-shaped" varieties with the simplest tomato flavor.

Tomatoes - disappointment of the year (I will not plant more)

11. Tomato "Mikado pink"

Tomato "Mikado pink" was from the category "rash purchase." Recommended on the market as an acclimatized new promising variety. According to the description: early ripe (96-102 days), indeterminate (1.5-1.8 m high), with pink flat-round, large, sweet, fleshy fruits, weighing 200-300 g (and in some up to 900 g).

In fact, we reacted unambiguously to our conditions - I reset all the color. The first to succumb to alternariosis. We managed to try tomatoes from him, but only 3 and only at the beginning of September. It turned out 100 g, the most mediocre taste, with green shoulders.

Perhaps, in other conditions, “Mikado Pink” would have shown itself better, but I won’t have it anymore.

From the advantages of the variety: powerful, but compact bush, not active pinching.

12. Tomato "Watermelon"

Another rash purchase - met on the market and confused the name with the variety "Watermelon".

According to the description: indeterminate, mid-season, large-fruited, very productive. Fruits weighing 300-400 g, raspberry, sweet, fleshy.

My first “watermelons” ripened in mid-July - exactly two. The following - in mid-August, also two. Tomatoes turned out small - 50 g. On the palate - nothing special, just a tomato. The bushes look kind of weak. The variety was painful. I’m not planting anymore.

Dear readers! 2019 was a difficult year for our gardens. Weather provoked the early development of a huge number of diseases. However, despite this, it is possible to evaluate the varieties, since resistance to local weather conditions and diseases is a huge part of success in choosing a variety. Despite the fact that many varieties of my choice this year have not shown themselves or showed not the best side, the list of "preferred" was replenished with new ones. And the experiment is always interesting!
